Emergent Life Lab

Explore the living universe with Emergent Life Lab

Watch real, evolving artificial life - free, in Classic Watch. Lab gives you the Living World: the same universe in three dimensions, with a camera that tours it by itself and tells you what it has found. Plus Isometric Watch and the research and analysis tools to investigate any of it. £6/month, one plan, cancel any time.

Current dataset: Public Universe 2 .

Recorded from the live world. Every frame is Public Universe 1's own published state, drawn by the same observer a member opens - not an animation, and not a different world made to look better. It has no sound, so the captions are on screen.

Sign in to subscribe

Lab is attached to an account, so you sign in first (email only, no password) and subscribe from there. That is also what lets a cancelled membership be resumed later into the same account, with its watchlist and saved controllers intact.

Free: watch the universe live

Nothing described here is removed from the free site. Classic Watch, selecting any organism and reading its full neural controller, and the technical Explore and Research pages all remain exactly as capable as they are today, no account required.

Watch

The live world, full zoom, no account required.

Brain Inspector

Senses, Network, Outputs, Influences, Learning and What it did, for any organism you select right now.

Explore & Research

The technical implementation pages, and every published Research Note's identifier, question, headline result and one limitation, in the open, for anyone.

World history

The most recent events, and the top living lineages.

Lab: the Living World

The trailer above is a recording of this, not a rendering of it. It is Lab's flagship observer and the one most members leave open.

The world in three dimensions

Real islands, real forests grown from real woody biomass, weather crossing real ground, and every organism drawn where the simulation says it is - as a soft-bodied creature you can tell apart at a glance, not a marker. Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, click anything alive to find out who it is.

A camera that watches it for you

Leave it alone and it starts touring: it scores what is happening across the whole world, checks it can actually see the thing it picked, and travels there. Digging, a crowd, a newborn, a storm, the oldest organism alive. It never cuts, and it gives the camera straight back when you touch anything.

It tells you what you are looking at

A running line naming what the camera found, and the world's own history beside it as it happens. Every statement is drawn from recorded state and labelled as either an observation or a reading of one - never a guess at why, because the simulation does not publish why.

Built to be left running

A full day-night cycle at the world's own clock, weather where the world says there is weather, and an interface that fades out of the way. It is meant for a second screen.

Lab also gives you Isometric Watch

The other observer, and the authoritative one: it draws the world cell by cell, exactly as the simulation holds it. Live, below - this is the real universe right now, not a recording.

Connecting…

Live · the real, currently-running universe

A Lab member can pan, zoom, select any organism and open its Brain Inspector; see the full preview page or open Isometric Watch if you already have Lab access. It has its own Ambient mode, and a very quiet optional procedural ambience - air, surf, foliage, the shelter of a cave - in a choice of three soundscapes, off by default.

Lab also adds

Full telemetry history

Every sampled population, energy, birth and death figure since genesis, not just the last few days: custom ranges, record highs and lows, and export.

Complete lineage ancestry

Every lineage that has ever existed, including extinct ones, with founder-genome comparison, generation depth and divergence history.

Watchlist

Save the lineages and organisms you care about and check on them from one place.

Controller archive & comparison

Save a controller snapshot from the Brain Inspector and compare it against another snapshot, another organism, or a lineage founder later.

Export

CSV and JSON export for telemetry, events, lineage tables and saved controller snapshots.

A live member dashboard

Real population, birth, death and event deltas since your last visit; watchlist activity for the lineages and organisms you follow; and dynamic world records, all generated from recorded data, never a fabricated summary.

Lab technical reference

Complete parameter tables bound to this specific universe's live configuration -- not just the ruleset in the abstract -- plus the telemetry, export and sound-system schema documented in full.

Development notes & roadmap

Real, dated notes on what was actually built, and a genuine roadmap of what's being explored next -- never manufactured content.

Full Research Notes

The complete ruleset, seeds and duration; every measurement and result table; the full interpretation, limitations and sources -- for every note in the public archive, not just its abstract.

How the demo works

The Lab demo is not a mock-up. It follows one real, fixed lineage from this world through its ancestry, genome divergence and recorded history, using the same numbers a member would see. It is not re-parametrisable and does not export. Membership gives you every lineage, every organism, your own saved archive, and export.

What Lab never does

A membership is a subscription to observation and analysis software and data, not a stake in the simulation. It never:
